Course Settings

A few notes about course settings. You can access them by clicking on Settings in the left hand navigation menu.

Course Dates

Canvas courses have term dates applied to them so they are easier to organize in Canvas (E21, A21, B21, F21, etc.) Courses are programmed to be "open to students" a week before the term starts, and "close" the day after the term ends. A course will not "open" without the instructor first Publishing the course. The term date signifies that the course is "available" to be published.

Many courses will need to be opened before or after the programmed dates.

Why would I need to open my course?

  • To add in other professors, TAs, or observing parties (then after they are added, you may close it again if you wish)
  • To leave my course open longer than the existing term for students

If you need to change your course dates outside of the default term, you may do so by following these instructions:

Note: If you need to keep your course open longer for an individual student to finish an incomplete, please contact canvashelp@wpi.edu for further instructions

Customize Navigation

If you look at your course site, there's probably a lot of items in the left hand menu that you aren't going to use.  You can limit student confusion (or cognitive overload) by hiding some of the items in your left hand navigation.  Click on Settings in the left hand menu, then click on the Navigation tab at the top of the screen.
